5 Basic Skills You Need to be an Accountant

I think most people would agree that accountants are highly skilled individuals. Accountants are known for being experts at analyzing, critical thinking, and problem solving. There are a plethora of skills you will need to develop to have a successful career in accounting.

In today’s post I am sharing five basic skills that you need to be successful as an accountant. This is most certainly not an exhaustive list, but I believe these skills to be essential. These skills are easily transferable to other roles and can be developed and strengthened over time.


As I mention in the video, I am still working to refine a few of these skills myself. If you are looking to improve your analytical skills, I linked to one of my favorite learning resources, LinkedIn learning. There are countless videos on LinkedIn learning to help improve your skills. Many companies will pay for your LinkedIn learning account but if this isn’t the case for you, you should be about to get at least a free one month trial.

If you already have the basics covered, check out my post on increasing your accounting skills. This post is focused on keeping up with the technological advances that are impacting the accounting industry. You may also find that you are looking to focus in on a particular accounting niche, and want to acquire skills specific to that. Check out my previous post on choosing an accounting certification.

      1. Yeah, I did a year of an accounting program at a college. It seems really interesting. Right now I’m taking a break, because I felt like I rushed into going to school. I would like to get back into actually.
